Child's Play: Why increasing opportunities to play and be active may improve students' academic and physical outcomes (Oct 2009)
With funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the JGC is conducting an implementation study of Playworks at eight Bay Area schools between September 2009 and December 2010. Since 1996, Playworks has worked with low-income schools, building play and physical activity into a positive school environment, offering opportunities throughout the entire day. In this first product from the evaluation, JGC researcher Katie Stokes-Guinan summarizes the literature on play and physical activity in school environments and discusses their effects on students’ academic outcomes.
